Koltsovo International Airport

Koltsovo International Airport is near Koltsovo, 16 km southeast of Yekaterinburg, in Russia. The airport is easily accessible and there are many bus routes linking Koltsovo to the city.

The Koltsovo International Airport was first opened in 1928 as a military base. Later on, on the 10th of July 1943, the Red Army Air Force Head commanded the military airport convert to a civilian airport called Sverdlovsk. Then on January the 1st, 1963, the Civil Flight Unit 120, the Airport and several other services came together and united into the Sverdlovsk Joint Air Unit of the Ural Civil Aviation Authority. The airport went through another face-lift and in 1991 it was restructured and became the First Sverdlovsk Air Enterprise.

Then in October 1993 it gained international status and two months later on the 28th of December 1993, the First Sverdlovsk Air Enterprise became private producing two joint-stock companies. The first one was called Koltsovo Airport Public Stock Company and the second Ural Airlines Public Joint-Stock Company. Koltsovo Airport Company is now a member of the Airports Council International (ACI) and is also a member of the Aeroport GA Association.

During the year 2004, over 1,461,070 passengers used Koltsovo airport and over 20,958,800 tons of cargo were transported by means of this airport. The airport has only two runways; one is 2,500 meters of asphalt and the other 3,012 meters of concrete and has up to sixty parking lots. From 2005, Koltsovo has taken the position of the fifth largest airport in Russia after the leading airports of Saint Petersburg and Moscow. It is also considered one of the finest airport terminals Russia has to offer and can handle a capacity of 600 passengers an hour.

Most operating and cargo aircrafts presently being used can be accepted at the Koltsovo International airport, including the Boeing 737, Airbus A320, Tupolev Tu-204 and the Iiyushin II-96. This airport is connected with more then fifty cities, which includes many European destinations. Plans don’t stop here, another terminal focused on internal flights is being built and expected to be twice the size of the new international terminal. Koltsovo also has a terminal and catering section for VIP passengers using the airline. Also a large cargo terminal and a logistic centre are busy being built. By 2009 a third runway will allow Koltsovo the ability to accept all aircrafts including the Boeing 747.
