Explore the Grand Collection of the Museum of Modern Art

The modern art museum that was opened in Petrovka, Moscow, in December 1999, goes by the name of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, or just the Museum of Modern Art. The establishment of the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow was initiated by the director of the Russian Academy of Arts, Zurab Tsereteli. It is the private collection of Tsereteli, originating from the Academy of Arts, that forms the core of the assemblage of the Museum of Modern Art. The museum itself is located in an 18th century architectural monument, Gubin’s Mansion, designed by architect Matvey Kazakov.

The Museum of Modern Art in Moscow boasts more than 1 500 20th century works of art and European art. The art that is displayed is sometimes controversial, contemporary and futuristic. Some of the famous names that are found throughout the museum are Picasso, Petrov-Vodkin, Chagal, Shemaikin and Malevich. The Russian avant-garde art collection features world famous artists such as Robert Falk, Alexandra Exter and David Burlyuk. Compositions by Vladimir Izdebski are also exhibited, as Izdebski was responsible for the series after the 1917 revolutions called “Salons de Paris”. Gregorian artist Niko Pirosmani’s work forms an extremely unique collection.

Work done by foreign artists are exhibited at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, such as sculptures by Armand and Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro’s ‘Sun Disk’. Contemporary art, such as the experimental form of art by the Japanese conceptualist Yukinory Yanagi’s “CIS Ant Farm”, and other art that is based on technology can be viewed. Lithographs by renowned American and European masters include works by Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Rufino Tamayo and Salvador Dali. An interesting collection on exhibit is the art of the non-conformists of 1950 to 1970, who were in opposition to the Soviet ideology, with artists such as E. Steinberg, A. Zverev, V. Komar and many more. Contemporaries that focus on “Actual Art” are represented Lena Hades, Serguei Shutov and Aiden Salakhov, to name a few.

Modern Art enthusiasts can enjoy the permanent and frequent temporary exhibitions that are held at the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow. The museum is also a centre for education, as the School of Modern Art works in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art which offers a two year programme in creative studiowork, that includes lectures in the demand in the market today, in relation with modern art work.
