It must be because some prominent Soviet politicians appeared inebriated in public view, but the popular notion of Russians being addicted to their vodka is exaggerated, if deserved at all! Yes, a spot to warm the cockles of the heart is almost inevitable in the bone-chilling ambience of any harsh winter, but Russians are not just great at food processing, but incredibly endowed in terms of a vibrant and diverse food culture as well.

Jarkoye for a Hearty Meal

Russian weather particularly in the winter months can chill you to the bone. The traditional meals in Russia therefore tend to be comfort foods that are hearty, filling and consumed without much delicacy or as separate courses. The severe climate in Russia also means that the vegetables consumed are those that grow below the ground, unaffected by frost the way the green leafy or soft vegetables would be. This is not to say that Russian food is not delicious

Nadia Petrova – Making Russia Proud

Nadia Petrova was born on 8 June 1982 in Moscow, Russia. A competitive spirit runs in her family with her father, Victor Petrova, excelling as a hammer thrower and her mother, Nadezhda Ilyina, winning a bronze medal in the 400 meter relay at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Both Nadia’s parents are still involved in athletics coaching. During her childhood, Nadia Petrova travelled with her parents to many countries around the world. The family settled for a time in Eqypt, giving Nadia the opportunity to train as a tennis player under the guidance of her parents and Mohammed Seif.
