The Russian city of Oryol is situated on the banks of the Oka River, about 360 kilometers south-west of Moscow. Oryol, or Orel, is the Russian word for “eagle”, so it is fitting then that an eagle is a prominent feature on the city’s coat of arms. The area surrounding Oryol is lush and green with the Krom, Tson, Orlik and Rybnitsa Rivers meandering through the countryside on their way to meet the Oka River. Huge broad leaf forests dominate the landscape, with the national park of the Oryol forest area boasting a wide variety of fascinating flora and fauna.

Toksovo is a popular ski resort and a sought after site for dachas – second homes for city dwellers. At a recent ceremony in Moscow, Russia, the ownership deed for a piece of land situated in the town of Jericho, Palestine, which had once belonged to Russian tsars, was handed over to the head of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, thereby handing the land back to Russia. Hassan Saleh, the mayor of Jericho handed over the document to Sergey Stepashin during a ceremony which both parties see as having far-reaching significance.

Established in the year 1808, as nominated by Alexander I, the Kremlin Armory is the oldest museum in Moscow, Russia. It was originally constructed in 1508 to house the arsenal of the royal family, but later became a treasure trove of jewelry, art and historical artifacts. Even though the Kremlin Armory, at the Moscow Kremlin, was assigned as a museum in 1806, the public only had the opportunity to view the many breathtaking pieces, of the history of Russia seven years later. One of its most prized possessions is the Monomakh’s Cap, also referred to as the Golden Cap.
