Exploring the Republic of Dagestan

The Russian Republic of Dagestan, located with the Caspian Sea to the east, Chechnya and Georgia to the west and Azerbaijan to the south, while officially forming part of Russia, bears little evidence of that fact. Dagestan means ‘country of mountains’ and this is an apt description, as some areas are so high and remote that they can only be reached by helicopter. With its rugged natural beauty, multicultural population and ancient history, Dagestan has also been described as a ‘diamond in the rough’ with many facets that shine through for travelers willing to spend time discovering its treasures.

The historical city of Kazan is one of the biggest cities in Russia and serves as a commercial, cultural and industrial powerhouse. Kandinsky Prize for Contemporary Art

The Kandinsky Prize not only honors top artists but awards the winners with fifty-five thousand euros in prize money. The first awards were handed out in a ceremony at the Winzavod Contemporary Art Centre on 4 December 2007. The concept was created through a collaboration between the Art Chronika Culture Foundation and the Deutsche Bank AG. It offers four categories for artists’ submissions. The winners last year were Vladlena Gromova (Young Artist), Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe (Media Art Project of the Year), Anatoly Osmolovsky (Artist of the Year) and Peter Goloschapov (People’s Choice Award). This year, more than three hundred entries were received and on 10 December 2008, the winners will be announced.

Yelena Isinbayeva: A Top Athlete

The International Association of Athletics Federation has named Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia as the IAAF 2008 World Athlete of the Year for a third time. The title was awarded to her previously in 2004 and 2005, and the 26 year-old multi-award winning beauty is widely considered to be the best female pole vaulter in history, a reputation earned through hard work and dedication to her chosen sport.
