Beautiful Performances by the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater
Konstantin Tachkin’s highly acclaimed St. Petersburg Ballet Theater, which was formed on 10 November 1994, is considered to be the youngest ballet companies in the Russian city of St. Petersburg – a city rich in culture, history and tradition. Of the more than 60 dancers in St. Petersburg Ballet Theater, the majority are graduates from the well-respected Vaganova Ballet School in St. Petersburg, having trained under the tutelage of renowned former prima ballerinas and dancers.
In additional to being appreciated by fellow Russians, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater has won international recognition and praise for its performances in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea and France. The company’s successful tour of the United Kingdom, which finished on 14 February 2008, drew rave reviews from critics, with the general consensus being that the highlight of each show was the effortless grace, beauty and talent of prima Ballerina, Irina Kolesnikova.
Multi-award winning ballerina, Irina Kolesnikova was born in St. Petersburg and graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in 1998. She was accepted into the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater as a soloist in December 1998, and due to her exceptional acting and dancing skills, Irina was promoted to principal dancer in 2000, becoming the company’s Prima Ballerina in 2001. She has been unfailingly captivating audiences since then. The other highly talented principal dancers of the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater are Anna Podlesnaya, Dmitri Akulinin, Andrei Stelmakhov and Olga Ovchinnikova.
The extensive repertoire of the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater includes classics such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Gisele, La Bayadere and Chopiniana. Audiences agree that the combination of breath-taking sets, dazzling costumes and impeccable choreography breathe new life into these age-old favorites in a way that needs to be seen to be believed.
The St. Petersburg Ballet Theater is taking a rest until 1 April 2008 and has scheduled a tour in South Africa for later in the year. Although the full tour schedule has not yet been announced, judging by the reviews of their last visit to South Africa, there is no doubt that they will receive a warm welcome.
Russia is a country well-known for producing accomplished athletes, artists, sculptors, authors, poets, dancers and more. Even in this wealth of talent and accomplishment, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater stands out as exceptional.
