Exceptional Performances of the Helikon-Opera
Multi award-winning Helikon-Opera in Moscow, Russia, has the reputation of being one of the most interesting and well attended theaters in the city. Under artistic director, Dmitry Bertman, Helikon-Opera offers a repertoire of more than 50 unique performances. Audiences can be sure that a Helikon-Opera performance will be out of the ordinary, sometimes surprising and always exhilarating. In April 2008 Helikon-Opera will be celebrating 18 years of success.
In 1990 Helikon-Opera was founded by People’s Artist of Russia and artistic director, Dmitry Bertman, along with chief conductor and musical director, Kirill Tikhonov. The beautiful 250-seat theater is situated in an 18th century palace near the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Bolshoy in Moscow. Subsidized by the city of Moscow, Helikon-Opera is a permanent theater troupe that employs around 300 people, including the performing artists, administration staff and back-stage staff.
Many opera lovers are of the opinion that the success of Helikon-Opera can be largely attributed to the strong personality and artistic vision of Dmitry Bertman. His modern approach, sense of humor and the sheer vitality he breathes into each production brings audiences back time and again.
Helikon-Opera has gained international recognition with performances at opera theaters in Great Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Canada, Ireland, Estonia, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Lebanon, Slovenia, Israel, New Zealand, and Denmark. The theater has released several video versions of popular performances, as well as a number of CDs. Helikon-Opera has received eight “Golden Mask” awards in different categories. In the year 2000, Helikon-Opera was declared winner of the Moscow opera festival and has also twice won a prestigious award from the Theatrical Workers Union.
A recent production by Helikon-Opera which was critically acclaimed, was the traditional festive concert, “Malchishnik”. The production was staged as a fashion show with artists displaying costumes by Honored Artist of Russia, Tatiana Tuluvieva, while they were singing soul-stirring arias. This performance was typical of how Dmitry Bertman takes a traditional concept and adds a modern twist to produce an entertaining performance to delight audiences.
If you are visiting the Russian city of Moscow, be sure to include a Helikon-Opera performance for a truly unforgettable experience.
