Fantastic Skiing at Krasnaya Polyana

The renowned snow skiing resort of Krasnaya Polyana (Beautiful Glade/Red Meadow) is located in the Western Caucasus of Russia at an altitude of 600 meters. Set against a stunning mountainous back-drop, this modern ski resort owes a lot of its popularity and development to the introduction of heli-skiing in the mid-1990s which provides access to previously inaccessible prime snow skiing areas. Apart from offering top class skiing opportunities to experienced skiers, Krasnaya Polyana makes provision for amateurs, with interesting ski slopes designed to assist in the development of skiing skills.

Krasnaya Polyana has been referred to as the “Russian Courchevel” because of its impressive ski slopes, well maintained equipment with lifts being fast and convenient, and a highly professional well-trained rescue team on hand. There are many chalets, hotels and restaurants in Krasnaya Polyana; the people are friendly and hospitable and the resort is safe. The recently renovated airport as well as a train station, makes this resort easy to reach.

The resort area of Krasnaya Polyana together with the city of Sochi have been selected to host the snow events (Alpine and Nordic) of the 2014 Winter Olympics and, with this in mind, the already excellent facilities are continually being upgraded. This will be the first time that Russia will be hosting the Winter Olympics. A new Russian National Sliding Centre is being constructed as a permanent venue that will feature one of the longest and most challenging tracks ever designed. The centre will host bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events. The Russian National Bobsleigh Team that was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place during the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, are looking forward to going for gold in their home territory. Psekhako Ridge has been chosen to host the cross-country skiing, biathlon and Nordic events with Roza Khutor Alpine Resort hosting the snowboarding and Alpine skiing events. Freestyle skiers will compete at the Alpika Service Mountain Resort with ski jumping and Nordic combined taking place at the Russian National Ski-jumping Centre.

With the unique sub-tropical climate, top-class sports facilities and well-developed infrastructure that Krasnaya Polyana and Sochi have to offer, the 2014 Winter Olympics to be held in Russia are sure to be a huge success - to the benefit of all involved.
