Russia’s Awe-Inspiring Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

Sputnik 1 was launched in 1958 and it was a massive victory for Russia. To celebrate this wonderful moment in the history of cosmonautics, the design created by A.N. Kolchin, A.P. Faidysh-Krandievsky and M.O. Barshch was selected to become the Monument to the Conquerors of Space. It is viewed as the most magnificent structure in Moscow. The monument consists of a beautiful shining silver rocket that rests on a Titanium stream, a hundred meters in height. On 10 April 1981, the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics was opened inside the monument. The Russian museum exhibits the long road to victory of Russian space exploration from 1920 until today.

When approaching the museum visitors will notice a granite pedestal on which a statue of the theoretical astronautics founder, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, stands. The base of the pedestal has been adorned with detailed tableaux and in front of the obelisk visitors will be able to walk down the Avenue of Cosmonauts. The Avenue of Cosmonauts has the busts of many legendary cosmonauts such as Yuri Gagarin and Valentia Terashkova. Just the monument alone is a breathtaking sight to behold.

The idea of opening a museum within the monument was suggested by Sergey Korolev, who was the Chief Designer for the Russian Soviet Space Program. The interior of this wonderful structure is uniquely decorated with stars and galaxies that make up the ever expanding universe. The launch of Sputnik 1 and all the research that led up to the artificial satellite’s placement is carefully documented and displayed in the museum. Visitors will also discover the secrets behind the first moonwalk and be able to marvel at space related artifacts that would otherwise never be seen by the public. Items, such as the first rocket engine, cosmonaut space suits, photos, moon surface research vehicles, food used by astronauts in space, landing apparatus, satellite mock-ups and a look at the cosmonaut-training center of Russia, are all protected in the walls of the museum.

Video presentations and video footage takes visitors into orbit to experience the true adventure of space exploration and the limitless possibilities of our amazing, unknown universe. Another fascinating exhibit in the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is the beautiful sci-fi masterpieces that bring color and intrigue to the walls of the hallway, painted by some of Russia’s most talented artists. This museum, this wonderful memorial to the cosmonauts that changed the face of space travel, is a magnificent educational tool of amazement, insight and awe, into a universe that very few have the opportunity to see.
