Petropavlovsk is a city with many different faces. It is not only an administrative center in the Kamchatka Peninsula, but serves as a fascinating destination in Russia that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The city was discovered and the first foundation for the port laid by explorer Vitus Bering. Bering reached Avacha Bay in 1740 on a voyage to America and is therefore seen as a founding father of Petropavlovsk.

The city went on to grow into a significant cultural and scientific location and up and until the twentieth century it was a vital fishing port, especially for salmon and crap, supplying the entire Soviet Union. Due to risk of earthquakes, there are no skyscrapers or very high buildings. There is no road access to the city, and visitors have to fly into the small Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport.
