Petropavlovsk is a city with many different faces. It is not only an administrative center in the Kamchatka Peninsula, but serves as a fascinating destination in Russia that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The city was discovered and the first foundation for the port laid by explorer Vitus Bering. Bering reached Avacha Bay in 1740 on a voyage to America and is therefore seen as a founding father of Petropavlovsk.

The city went on to grow into a significant cultural and scientific location and up and until the twentieth century it was a vital fishing port, especially for salmon and crap, supplying the entire Soviet Union. Due to risk of earthquakes, there are no skyscrapers or very high buildings. There is no road access to the city, and visitors have to fly into the small Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport. Taxis and buses are available for public transport.

Recently, the city has concentrated on being a tourist destination in Russia and expanding the tourism industry greatly. Some of the main attractions in Petropavlovsk include the Lenin Square, the Naberezhnaya Embankment, the Vitrus Bering Monument and Museum, the Museum of Regional Studies, Museum of Volcanoes, Monument to Charles Clark, Monument to La Perouse, Memorial Complex on Nikolskaya Hill, The Chapel and the Monument to the Heroes of Lt. A. Maksutov’s Battery.

Visitors who prefer outdoor activities will thoroughly enjoy a tour of the Valley of the Geysers. The city is surrounded by volcanoes that enjoy showing off with bubbling water, steam and the odd grumble every so often. If testing fate in the skies above the live volcanoes does not appeal to visitors, then a boat ride to Avachinskaya Bay to explore the coastline and enjoy the local cuisine onshore will be a great adventure.

The city also has a variety of shops, stores, restaurants and cafes. For a little nighttime action, guests are recommended to stop by the Casino Colliseum at the Avacha Hotel.
