I would be interested in hearing about that professor too. I don't understand, however, what your concern is with spelling and grammar. Usually it is expected that by the time a student gets through a certain level of schooling, that these basics are well understood. Science is also very exact, and much attention is paid to detail... so why not pay attention to the style of writing and the details therein?
Also, can you explain your first sentence or rephrase it please? I don't quite understand what you mean by that.
