I could have said that governors are still elected indirectly through people representatives, and it would be truth, but I'd better say that I prefer appointment (and not only of governors, but of mayors and district heads) rather than indirect election, and I hope it will be next step.

True, but it is because Yeltsin drank a lot, while country was going to hell, while Putin began to rise Russia and lives of millions improved. Does it surprise you, that he has a lot of supporters and Yeltsin had not? I see nothing illogical here.

It is well-known western fairy tale, that with new NTV owners free press in Russia died. In fact, there're still many independent (or rather dependent from moneybags, not state) stations. And nobody with access to internet ever complained about lack of independent, anti-government, and dirt-throwing articles in Russian press. Do your search.
