Problem with computer

I have a Compaq, and everytime I try to shut it off, I have to do it twice. This has been going on for a year now. Even when I turn the computer on, it pops up twice. Not sure, but can this be some kind of virus. What can I do about this? Thanks!

Can you give your computer's/OS's specifications?

What do you have to do twice? A `soft' shutdown (using your OS) or a `hard' shutdown (using a button on the computer)?

What pops up twice?

I think it's better to explore all possible options before reinstalling the OS. Reinstalling the OS can be a big pain.

I think he meant soft shutdown, because holding power button shuts computer down immediately (and if in this case it suddenly turns on again then he needs to check 1. connections between buttons and motherboard 2. motherboard itself (maybe bios update is needed).)

Note: If it's Mac I don't have an idea what to do, because I have never used it before.

If the problem is with soft shutdown, then it's problem with OS. If OS is called 'windows' I recommend reinstalling it each 6 months, to keep good functioning.

It depends on OS and user's skills. Windows often requires reinstallation to correct some strange behaviour, but it's also very easy to reinstall. Unix-family systems can be more difficult to reinstall and configure, but they have much less probability of "strange behaviour".

I've never had to reinstall windows, and I've recovered from some bad crashes, where most people would have given up.

I don't understand why people reinstall windows as soon as there is a problem, that should be the last resort.

It's possible to recover from bad crash, because it's clear what you need to repair and how. It's often impossible to correct small problems with OS behaviour, because nobody knows what causes them and even Billy Gates has no idea how to correct it. So reinstalling is the first option that comes to mind.

When you turn off your computer, before it completes shutdown, stop the electrical
power to it. Do this a few times and run your disc clean-up software which will
uninstall files not used. (maybe even the one causing problems)

Let me know if this works!
