I am happy we are doing something constructive on this board. If you have a fast connection you may find Ubuntu easier loading because I think you are going to have to use either G Parted or QT Parted to prepare the hard drive.Mepis is easy to load too. Then if you find a junk PC with low capacity hard drive you would enjoy Damn Small Linux. Mark down the steps to burn the disk. The rest is easy. I use NERO.But also I have used the free program Deep Burner. You must burn the ISO to disk. >> http://www.weethet.nl/english/cdrw_usingnero_iso.php OH YES! To the Russian up there.I will download ASP tonight and make a disk.Im happy all of you are here. If you can add more I hope you will.

I have ASP in my library, and installed the free version on a test machine late last year. I like it pretty much, but I don't care for their two tier marketing plan, where I have to pay for the full OS, even though it is all Open Source at it's core. Still, I like the way the four disks of the free offering work. Then again, Russians have a solid presence in all areas of the Linux universe. As for Windows, I no longer support that virus. There are no dual boot, or single boot Win PC's surviving in my home. KDE is my preferred window manager, and the various flavors of Linux support all of my computing needs. I do have a Win box for playing games (in storage), but it has not been switched on in many Months, as Linux plays games in pretty fine style lately.

And there he is.Hey Voayger13.Glad you showed up.Can you explaina few things here.I think we need some info on Linux to DSL or cable.I use only wireless. Also if you can put a bit on ISO burning,I think some of these guys may burn a CD of a Linux load. This PC here is double loaded with Win 2 K and Santa Fe Linux. I have no sound on Santa Fe.If you ever get time ,Burn a live Santa Fe and maybe look into the sound to see
what I might can do,I have the loadable disk but the live is the same.

Ok,So everybody has made a Linux disk and loaded it? Great! Now let us move on to computer building. You only need a case ,motherboard with CPU and a few other parts. They all plug together and any 5 year old can do it. Everyone buy parts and get ready.

Voyager, two reasons of using Windows in office, here in Russia, are 1C:Enterprise (for accounting, storage, trade, human resources mamagement, and so on) and ConsultantPlus (full collection of Russian laws). Then it's like an avalanche - all this require at least one Windows Server... er.. I hate it! Both program complexes exist only as windows applications, in spite of constant promises of developpers to release linux versions. And the only reason why people use Windows at home is... playing games.

Alex,

Windows is big in the commercial "added value" area, especialy for products like the 1C accounting suite. It's funny that you mention that company, as a friend in Moscow supports 1C software products (Installation, upgrades, and troubleshooting for client companies). As I recall, 1C products are sold through franchise companies. Is that what you do?

Our company sells 1C and ConsultantPlus products in addition to other activity, my job is to keep computers in main and branch offices, and distributed network alive and well, so I do not interact with 1C in any way.

The problem is, 1C is used everywhere, it's hard to find company or enterprise in our city or in the whole country not using 1C, so unfortunatelly Windows, that bag of bugs, will never die. The same with Consultant, they like Windows too much. Their latest idea was Automatic Update Server for distributors, based on Windows' IIS. I said I'd never open IIS web server to the Internet, and I think I wasn't alone, because soon after this idea was introduced, developers ceased the project, because "there was too little interest among distributors".
