DV didn't piont it out directly, but the Gimp is extremely impressive, full featured, and even though it was developed as a Linux app, it is also ported to evil Windows operating systems. In any and all cases, it is FREE. As in speech and beer. It is also pretty awesome, and between the Gimp and the multitude of free plugins available for it, you will not miss the idea of paying for Photoshop.

The Gimp is plain awesome, even if you did have to pay for it, and the internet abounds with tutorials, tips, and hints. Linux Format magazine (from England) has had a running series of Gimp how-to articles for a long time. Back issues are available from their website. Go Gimp......

By the way, when you photo/video artists get a free minute, check out "Blender". It doesn't compete with the Gimp, rather it defines it's own territory. It's worth a look for the hardcore among us.
