Rush Limbaugh on Bush's European Visit
The headline in Wednesday's Los Angeles Times reads, "Bush Hews to His Views in the Face of Controversy." This story reminded me of the Reuters piece which reported, incredibly, that Bush was "doing in office what he said he was going to do on the campaign trail" and how this was a new "political tactic." I'm not making it up. That's what the story said! Honesty and dignity and keeping your word are "tactics" to the left.
The main thrust of the story is that Bush is sticking to his guns over there. Is that shocking? What's he supposed to do - go to Europe and flip-flop on his principles? Of course not. He's telling it like it is, and is already converting people to his way of thinking on missile defense - which is what has got the press and the libs all tied up in knots.
This kind of opinionated, skewed reporting is utterly amazing. It shows the arrogance of these people in the press. If you are a conservative, and they disagree with you, you're supposed to check your principles at the door and adopt whatever the wacko leftists believe.
Need more evidence that Bush is succeeding on his European trip? Get this: Former Russian President Boris Yeltsin told his successor, Vladimir Putin, to beware of "strong-arm U.S. negotiating tactics" during a forthcoming meeting with President Bush. He was referring to Bush's statement in which Bush said he wanted to "look Putin in the eye" and tell him how he was sincere in a search for new ways to keep the peace.
Here is what Yeltsin told public television: "Even such a phrase by the young George W. Bush that 'I want to meet Putin to look this kid in the eye' sounds crude from the president, but this is the American style." Boris Yeltsin, in other words, was warning the new Russian president Vladimir Putin to beware of the latest Bush "tactic".
Yeltsin, who had summits with Bush's father and whose talks with ex-President Clinton were known as "the Bill and Boris Show," said that U.S. negotiators like to play hardball. Vladimir Putin met George W. Bush for the first time on Wednesday in the Slovenian capital. "Beware, he'll look you right in the eye," huh? I guess Clinton didn't look Yeltsin right in the eye, and I guess Bush's dad didn't look Yeltsin right in the eye. Somebody must not have looked at somebody else right in the eye in order for Bush looking at somebody eye-to-eye to be a tactic and something new.
Anyway, this is basically the same tactic as doing what you say you're going to do. Bush is going to face the opposition head-on, and not simply tell foreign leaders what they want to hear without any intention of keeping his word. This is sure to be as welcome a change in our president for the world community as it was for America.
