Nicholas II canonised

Spokesmen for Patriarch Alexei, spiritual head of the Russian Orthodox Church, have announced that the last Tsar, Nicholas II, and his family, have been canonised as Saints.

In a short statement, the spokesman was keen to make clear that it was not for his role as head of state, but as a holy martyr, that this status had been conferred upon the Tsar, who was murdered in 1918 by Communist forces.
