To the families of the sailors, I give my heartfealt sympathies. I am an american and acknowledge that the Russian government did all that they could have done by themselves. I am dissapointed that it took so long to request help from other sources. The cold war is over and whatever help should be provided to anyone, especially in situations such as this. Old habits die hard I guess...they are all in my prayers.

I concur.
I wish Russia could accept the offer to help by the U.S and Britian. Personally I think accepting their offer is not a sign of weekness at all. On the other hand, no matter how small their help would be, this indirectly lays down a small peaceful seed to our future generations. anonymous |

Cold war memories die hard, and I am aware that there is fierce resentment against in Russia towards the United States because of how America has treated Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union. While I agree the U.S. has acted with incredible stupidity and squandered an opportunity to mend fences with Russia, the Russians own false pride seems to have caused them to choose death for the sailors on the Kursk rather than ask for assistance, which the U.S. is able and willing to give. I do not point fingers with blame here, and if the sailors are lost, perhaps we can create meaning for their sacrifice if the two old cold warriors could act in concert and put aside the cold war once and for all. I am an American veteran who has always held my Soviet and Russian counterparts in high regard and respect. I am glad we never had to shoot it out. Can we now, finally, be friends? I hope so.

the latest news seems to be that the Russian navy has finally agreed to accept foreign help - a British specialist submarine-rescue team is on its way and will arrive on Saturday, Norwegian divers are also preparing to assist and will arrive on Sunday.
Sadly, the predictions for oxygen supply is that it would probably not last beyond Friday, and the earlier SOS-tapping from inside the hull has stopped :-( And Mr Putin has gone on holiday. Dr W. |

It's sad that it took the entire crew.
Submariners are a special breed of sailors. The US has lost subs as well in the new era navy. It's cold and a lack of crew sounds makes it seem like even worse. I'm sure the prayers of many where sent, as well as mine. |
