Name Game
LOL~ It certainly SOUNDS Russian, HOWEVER~ I've been playing with these folks files long enough to realize that what you see, may NOT be what you get! Even with "given" names. Hannia will help..she's is WONDERFUL!
I forgot to ask...what religion were the ancestors in question? My village information came from the marriage records, found in the church.

Name game
Sorry, LOL is "computerese" for Laughing Out Loud~ I have to laugh at myself because I started out looking for a name I KNEW was Russian, Vasyl...ended up with a Wasyl, who became Basil, Charles & Charles Basil!
The BEST suggestion (other than the Ukraine board) is to go back as far as YOU can remember. What church did the family attend? Where was it? New York, PA, etc... Once you can remember a SPECIFIC church, find the listing for that church and give them a call. Most of the church secretaries are wonderfully helpful and will dig up information for you...marriage records, baptisims, funerals. That, at least, would give you some dates to work with. It's very difficult (if not impossible) to do research if you have no dates to work with. Even "guesstimated" time lines are better than no time line. The "standard" genealogical formula is to use the "25 year rule". In other words, count back 25 yrs. for each generation. It's NOT fool-proof, as there are folks who married and had children VERY early and there are those who didn't have children until late in their 50s. But if you have no starting place... If you go back from YOUR birth year, 25 years would be the estimated year of your father/mother's birth. 25 years back from that would be grandparents, and so on with each generation. It's usually off by only a few years and gives a "ball park" timeline to search within. You can also use a general search on any of the genealogy sites. In other words, do NOT use a given or first name. Search ONLY by the surname. Sometimes you'll find who you are looking for with records showing a slight variant in the spelling of the given name. Any time I can be of help, please don't hesitate to e-mail me. I have the link active here (just look below the message & you will see the e-mail icon). Well, I'm off to edit my site & hunt Ukrainians~

Surname locale
Hulwen, just checked for information on Ancestry.com and found a POSSIBLE location for one of your ancestor's origins.
Full Context of Dictionary of Jewish Surnames in Russian Empire Ol'denburg (Vitebsk gub., Vilna gub.) T: from the great duchy Oldenburg (Germany) {Ol'denberg}. Don't know if this will help, but thought I'd do a little checking to see if anything pops up. I came across a couple of sites listing him. This one has photos, in case you don't have any or would like to see them. It is a site listing his academic contributions and membership to the board of this academic facility in Russia. That should also give you another location in which to check records. The home page is in Russian and I can't get the translator to work on the main page, sorry....If someone can translate it for you (perhaps here or UKI board) it might be a big help. http://hp.iitp.ru/ger/20/2074.htm Here are some other links that might prove useful: http://www.hist.de/fees.htm http://genforum.genealogy.com/oldenburg/ http://www.distantcousin.com/Surname...name=Oldenburg http://bobcat.webappcabaret.net/roya...iog?person=708 http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2975/Ridxo.htm http://www.peterwestern.f9.co.uk/maximilia/index2o.htm http://ancestorguide.com/O/Oldenburg/ The last few are from genealogy pages by various individuals. They MAY have something that can give you a lead. http://home.earthlink.net/~mwatts60/...x/fam_4.html#8 http://www.genealogy-sh.de/fam-trees/bunning/idx4f0.htm [Edited by csockol on 28th July 2002 at 18:33]
