A photo was actually taken of the real flag raising, from a plane at some distance. The flag (for whatever reason) seems to have been a navy flag.

This photo was made by Yevgeny Khaldei on second of May 1945. Flag was one of nine self made flags, each to one of the nine divisions going to Reichstag. Flags were made out of red table-clothes. IIRC. But I'll check on that. It's not so simple, there was few different flags raised at different places.
