modern mythology

Я верю, друзья, караваны ракет
Помчат нас вперед, от звезды до звезды.
На пыльных тропинках далеких планет
Останутся наши следы.

I guess the flight was more a matter of spirit and idea. Apart from science.

The everlasting innermost dream of humanity came true: the man left his mother planet.

No matter for 108 minutes only.

The man saw what nobody ever saw before: he took a look at the Earth.

Nothing impossible now for the Man Almighty.
Closer to God now, the Man Almighty.

I mean you guys may be right when saying that the Russians had no means to put man in the space when there houses werent fitted with pipes.
But the point which I was illustrating was that of aftermath. After the event modern society had achived plenty of benefits and like two side of coins, this also had a bad effect. I guess Russia was not in position to spend on such projects but they certainly helped the general cause of space development. And thus i guess it was an important day for every one

I am trying hard to think of even ONE, from which the Soviet population generally benefitted? Can you help me here with some specific suggestions?

maybe I could?

1st of all, Russia has a highly symbolic culture.

Bringing the man in space has more value for an average Russian than having a new car instead of the old one.

Both GB and USA are cultures of (more or less) structural frame. So it's hard to explain, unless you use math to prove it. But, there is a theory, used to find the cross-cultural differencies, based on the works of Prof. Hoffstede (ie Gallup institute uses it for the research purposes). Most modern economic theories use it niow-a-daiz for several purposes, like calculating inflation expectations, stability ratio etc.

2nd, Russian space programmes were merely a demonstration to the world of what Russia can.
Let me explain: NATO was always a threat for Russia. Well, I could search my base for the description of the nuclear attack plans US had against Russia, dated (if my memory is correct) 1949, 1953, 1958. But I'm not sure its worth while.

Just in order to remind you: USSR never had any military base near to USA, while US had a lot near Russia.

Launching a space craft was a clear signal to US: 'Gentlemen, now we can reach you, like it or not.'

This is like a signal done in the 80s then the first (and last) Russian space shuttle was launched without crew:
'Gentlemen, our computers and transceivers are better than yours, like it or not'
(btw, this signal was very good understood. I remember the words of one of NASA officials - 'NASA is not yet capable to launch an uncrewed shuttle and arrange a safe grounding'

3d, Russian space programmes are much more cost efficient than the American. There was a joke (based on a true fact) in the 60s:

on a conference dedicated to the space exploration the NASA reporter describes the accomplishments:

- and, among the other inventions, we created a pen which can be operatable in the null-gravity conditions. We worked hard, and spent only 5 millions of US dollars to do so!!!

a Russian representative stands up and asks:

- Sorry, Sir, but did you try to use a pencil?

-----------------------------------------------------------

Just to underline all said: if Russia will be capable of sending the crew to Mars, I (as a taxpayer) will be glad and proud. It will bring more value to my life than a new Mercedes or Pontiac.

nope,
u guys missing the point that i made. The space exploration was pioneered from that event. That was more important. I mean Usa might not have invested in space exploration if russia would have not made a move.
think it any way it was a blessing in dissguised for the U.S

2 aprzaveri

I simply answered a question.

12 of April is a day of Cosmonautics in Russia. And people are still damn happy about Yuri Gagarin the first man in space.

All, who (this way or another) have any connection to the space programmes celebrate. And I do with them
