I am wondering if anyone can give me some information on archaeological excavations that have been done of Old Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod in the past seven years. I also wnat information on what it is like to be an archaeologist in Russia. Specific book titles, magazine articles, and websites would be most helpful to me. I am doing an independent study on this topic. I can be emailed at phipps@selway.umt.edu. Sallie |

Hello Sallie
I have no answers for you myself but I think you asked some really good questions and I hope that someone out there has the answers you need. There has been some very interesting discussions here before, regarding older russian history, but almost all facts and information used seems to have been taken from various historic chronicles. I have only seen archeology being mentioned twice, both times by Dr. Woland, and the responce was not enthusiastic. So I to am very interested to know what status archeology has in Russia. If anyone knows the answers to Sallie´s questions, please share them with us. Regards Thomas |

<< You have a better memory than I do on this I don't have any good ideas on this either, though. I know foreign archaeologists DO work in Russia, as I have - in my professional capacity - organised their transport and visa arrangements in the past. That particular "dig" was in the North Caucasus around Mineral'ny Vody. There is a fairly new Museum of Archaelogy of Moscow, located on Ploschad' Revolutsii (Revolution Square) right in the centre. I've always guessed that they have things there found when they were digging the 9-storey-deep Manege Shopping Centre and Car Park directly adjacent, but I'm not at all sure of that? I can't find an address or phone for them, though. You could try the Museum Of the History of Moscow - Novaya Ploschad' 12, Moscow 103012, tel (095) 924 8490, fax 924 3145, and sorry, I don't have an email for them :-( mb (aka Dr_Woland) |
