Questions for Russian's opinion about Mongol invasion?
Hi, I wonder how the Mongol invasion is described in history education in Russia. I knew it might quite negetive previously, probabaly more negetive than western countires. However, there is a new trend in US and other western country which give very positive comments to Gengis Khan and his Empire. For example a American wrote a new book "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World", in which he describe Gengiskhan as a liberal, generous and intelligent world leader who gives significant contribution to establish the modern civilization. The author has influence the academy world in western countries. Many western historians have changed their comments about many impacts of the Mongols from negative to possitive. It was also reported that modern historians think the damage of Mongol empire was exaggerated.
My question is , has the new trend in western historians influence russian historians and history educations. How is your education in Russia describe the Mongol invasion in past and now? I would appreciate your help. |

Answer
it's described namely as invasion, mongols are our enemy -- so, textbooks.
But actually, there were no any mongolo-tatar invasion. just try to imagine this, take a map, find all the places related and you'll understand why I say so. Our famous historian Lev Gumilev proved all this in his searchings. one reason: suh an invasion was just impossible. |

There are two points of view on consequences of the Mongolian yoke.
According to the first point of view the Mongolian invasion had negative influence on development of Russia. - 49 Russian cities, from 74, have been destroyed by Batu Khan. In 14, life wasn't restored any more. - Many craft secrets have been lost. - The population of the country was sharply reduced (murders, slavery). - Decline of agriculture, craft, culture - Movement of Russia to despotic board has amplified According to the second point of view any influence of Mongols on Russia is denied, down to denying existence of the Mongolian yoke. At the Russian schools the first point of view is preferred. As to Genghis Khan. It's impossible to tell that the attitude to his person in Russia is negative. Probably because Genghis Khan actually has not won Russia. The Mongolian yoke in Russia begins in 1237, 10 years after Genghis Khan's death. The conqueror was Batu Khan, Genghis Khan's grandson. Even it's possible to tell that the attitude to Genghis Khan is positive. Russian director Sergey Bodrov has shot such film as Mongol, which glorify Genghis Khan's person. |
