I'm an american highschool student who enjoys studying Russian history and modern Russian politics. I am looking to learn what native Russians view of President Vladimir Putin. I have heard that he worked for the KGB. Someone even said he worked for SMIRSH. Does anybody else believe that he could bring about the revival of the USSR. This would be a very unfortunate thing.

I think even if Putin wanted it (and I don’t believe he did) it would be impossible to return to USSR in its old form. The emergence of any forms of “ruled” and relatively civilized democracy is more dangerous .
As far as I remember during his all KGB career Putin worked in GDR as an “official spy” (GDR was a communist country).
And I think his work for KGB itself doesn't make an evil guy of him.
SMERSH (SMERt’ SHpionam – Death to Spies) was a military secret service during the Great Patriotic War and as far as I know it stopped to exist after the end of the war. So Putin is to young to work in it.

i really like putin. i think he truly does have the interest of russia as his primary motivation. i think his experience in the KGB gives him incredible perspective into the inner workings of russian politics. he knows the way things were and he knows how he wants things to be. i think the west should celebrate putin's leadership instead of fearing it. i also think it to be illogical to assume putin, just because of his soviet ties, would attempt to revert back to communism. perhaps there is still an unhealthy paranoia in americans today.
