THERE USED TO BE MORE THAT 500 OPERATIONAL SUBMARINES IN RUSSIAN WATERS BUT NOW, THERE IS ONLY LESS THAN 80.
I HAVE BEEN TO RUSSIA ONCE AND SAW A RUSSIAN DOCK FULL OF SUBMARINES THAT HAS BEEN EITHER LEFT THERE TO RUST OR BE SOLD AS SCRAP METALS ONE OF THEM , MY FRIEND TO LD ME , IS A DELTA CLASS SUBMARINE. MOST OF THEM ARE CONVETIONAL DIESEL ELECTRIC SUBS WHICH HAVE BEEN LEFT THERE SINCE WORLD WAR 2. POWERFUL NUCLEAR SUBS WERE BUILD DURING COLD WAR SUCH AS PROJECT-971 AKULA (BARS)---- ATTACK SUBMARINE WHICH IS EQUALY PERFORM WELL DURING HER TRIALS. AKULA IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST FEARED SUBMARINE FOR THE UNITED STATES . IT ALSO PERFORM EQUALLY AS THE AMERICANS 688(I)HUNTER/KILLER OR OR LA CLASS BUT NOW THERE IS ONLY LEFT A FEW . THE REST OF THEM ARE LAID TO RUST IN DOCKS ....... . SUBMARINES IS ONE OF RUSSIAN BEST WEAPONS DURING WAR |

In June I was sat reading the Independent Newspaper whilst waiting to catch a flight to Canada and there was an article in it about ex-Soviet Subs. According to the article many of them are rusting in Dry docks awaiting decomissioning. Apparantly the Russians have asked for help but none has been forthcoming. This is very worrying as many of the old Nuclear Subs still have their Nuclear reactors in them and these could become a serious environmental problem. I also read that President Putin planned to try to restore some of Russia's pride by rebuilding various bits of its armed forces. As the Submarine section of the Navy has such an illustrious history it was thought that this would be one area to be improved. But the Kursk incident may have led to a partial shelving of these plans.
