Russians Mourn Victims of Political Repression
Ekho Moskvy - Almost 2 thousand people rallied on Lubyanka Square in Moscow on Tuesday to remember the victims of Soviet political repression. The Day of Memery of Victims of Political Repressions is marked openly since 1989, but the idea to mark the day was born among Soviet dissidents in 1974. Lubyanka Square is the place where the headquarters of the FSB – formerly the infamous Soviet secret service KGB are located.
Leaders of liberal political parties Yabloko and Union of Rightist Forces took part in the meeting along with other State Duma deputies, foreign diplomats and former political prisoners.
The head of Presidential Commission for Rehabilitation Aleksandr Yakovlev called for the Authorities to erect a monument for the victims of political repressions on Lubyanka Square. Representatives of the Memorial society suggested that the Alley of Memory is founded in Moscow where remains of those who perished in Stalin’s concentration camps would be buried.
