Learning Russian
I learned (am still perfecting) Russian the hard way, but if i had it to do over again, I'd do it the way I'm learning German now. 1) Buy a Pimsleur Comprehensive course (16 CDs) http://www.CheapPimsleur.com is the cheapest [they buy it back from you for $100 when your done], then do the next level, etc.
2) Get your absolutely favorite American movie, in Russian (not the crappy Russian overdub where the English is also audible as this will really mess you up [you'll end up straining to hear the English], I've got all the Lord of the Rings for example), it's best if it's a movie you have memorized in English. Dvds are great b/c you can turn on the subtitle feature to watch w/English subtitles, then turn it of. 3) Listen to some Russian music, mp3search.ru is a place I like. 4) MEMORIZE your case endings (Nom., Gen., Dat., etc...) it's a pain, but worth it b/c they won't understand you until you do this. Perfect pronounciation can wait, but saying CTOL (stol, stolom, stolami, stole, stolax, etc.. [variations of the word table for you newbies] can make a lot of difference. 5) Make or buy flashcards. Keep at least 10 words in your pocket, then when you are waiting in line for groceries, etc. you recapture your time. 6) As you are walking down the hall, going to your car, try to think simple thoughts in Russian, i.e. "Ya idu" = "I am walking", even if you can't get the grammar right, just don't be afraid to make mistakes. "I to go" is better than nothing. Check out the awesome article on learning a language at: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/11/9/195744/646 I wish I had had this article about 3 languages ago... p, Jeremiah aka EPEMA (read as if Cyrillic letters = "Yeryoma") |
