Dear Oliviet:

Welcome to russia.com!!!

You should be able to learn a certain degree of conversational russian while in russian...however, it is extremely useful to be able to read russian (without regard to direct translation). What if it's late at night...and there is no one around to TALK to?

If you know the cyrillic alphabet you will be able to read russian, look words up in the dictionary and slowly and painfully translate and you are also able to "transliterate (exchanging cyrillic letters for english letters)."

Interestingly, my ability to translate sucks...however, I'm able to read newspaper articles to russians and they follow me.

Barnes & Nobles has an excellent selection of self-teaching materials (books). Personally, I highly recommend avoiding MOST tapes & CD's..they are expensive and horrible teaching aids!

HOWEVER, THE ACTUAL BRAND OF BARNES & NOBLES RUSSIAN CD'S (WITHOUT ANY BOOKS OR WRITTEN LESSONS) IS FREAKING AMAZING!!!!
