Hi
A foreign movie in a cinema in Russia, is that with subtitles or is it syncronized (translated)?

If you buy a DVD movie in Russia, you can choose to see them with original soundtrack and then Russian subtitling, right?

thx

I'm surprized nobody answered you yet
Foreign movies in Russia are always dubbed (translated). I don't remember a single case of subtitles .
I have never bought a DVD in Russia, but based on my experience with tapes, the soundtracks are always original, not translated. No subtitles as well.

thanks for you answer.
If I understand you right, you mean the music there is the original and then the 'talking' in the movies are dubbed.

Most of the movies in the cinema is dubbed. But the are exclusions mostly in special cinemas. I live in Moscow and I know a few of them. One shows movies with subtitles, another only with original sountrack, but you can listen to the synchronized translation (optionally) through the ear-phones. There is another one of a regular type (to which I've gone for 3 years), but I have seen 2 movies with subtitles there - Robert Oltman's Gosford Park and Italian S.O.S.; so I have no idea what are there criteria on the matter of showing films. But definitely, blockbusters are never shown with subtitles.
As for DVD, I haven't seen a single one, but my friends say, there is always an option of original soundtrack, subtitles or dubbing.
As for the soundtracks (I mean songs here), we've had only one precedent so far - "Chicago", which was dubbed entirely by the team of the Chicago musical on Moscow stage (and to my mind even the idea of it was horrible).
