All Tarkovsky's films are a 'must see' My favourite will always be 'The Stalker' though I do love Solaris.
Have you seen that new one, by Zvyagintsev, - "The Return" ? It seems like its "the return" of Russian cinema after a long sleep of 1990s. Will definitely ring familiar tunes if you're into Tarkovsky.

Thanks !

Not seen this Rain- thanks for the recommendation, I shall try and find this.

I do love Tarkovksy- I remember seeing Solaris a few times in some smokey dungeon of a cinema in London many years ago...brings back some memories

Try to catch "Lilja 4-ever" by Lukas Moodysson. He is not Russian but most of the movie happens in the former Soviet Union (the exact location is never disclosed). He also uses a lot of young Russian actors who speak in broken Russian. It will be a nice test of your language skills if you can understand Russian. It will also give you a good view of contemporary Russia and Russian people's desires and attitudes.

This was filmed at Paldiski. An estonian(not Russia) ghost town. There was a soviet subs base once, and days were bright for the city, but now it's gone.
Talking fare, film has good idea and bad scenario embodied by a naive swede.

Thanks for the recomendations, I shall try and find these.

Things 'Russian' seem to be all the flavour in London at the moment, with exhibitions at the National Gallery and the Bolshoi Ballet at Covent Garden, apart from the football clubs being bought or eyed by Russian buyers

Probably need to remortgage my house to buy a ticket at Covent Garden though

On a slighty different track, can anyone recommend good contemporary Russian writers that might be available in translation (or not, but might be in the future) ? I have read most of Pelevin's books but I don't really know of any contemprary writers of interest, although I suspect this is because, sadly, they have not been translated.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hahaha. I would like to shoot half of the characters right on the spot, starting from Lilias mother. Really, I don't think... no I'm assured they don't represent russian attitudes.

About russian writers,ROOTDBA, I 'll do some research.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Finished Moscow Stations (Moskva Petushki) a few weeks back..both hilarious and very sad (especially given Yerofeev's own tragic life). But, sad to say, modern Russian literature does seem to be under represented in translation here.
