What I consider to be the greatest of post-Soviet films has to "Burnt by the Sun", perhaps THE film that explores the terrible sufferings caused by Stalin's purges.

I also find Eisenstein's "Potemkin" another great cinematic classic that explores the sufferings of mankind as well as being an amazing Soviet film.

Would anyone happen to have any information on "Ivan the Terrible Parts One and Two" by the way?
Ivan part one is a true masterpiece; as for part two I'm sorry to say I agree with Stalin
They are both for sale by Tartan Video with English subtitles.

Kavkazsky Plennik, for some reason called 'Prisoner of the Mountains' in English, is just the story by Tolstoy; albeit with a more sympathetic portrayal of the Caucasians.

Balabanov's "War", like "Brother 2", was savaged by Western critics for being too Politically incorrect - there's no better recommendation

My favourite film about Russia... Most likely it's "A Siberian Barber" - "Сибирский цирюльник". Advise to watch it.
Movies about war...certainly the're great but life consist not just of war

I have just finished watching another Russian film called "Night Watch" (Nochnoi Dozor), a Russian take on computer graphics and sci-fi horror. It is actually a good movie (a bit of a cross between Highlander and The Matrix). Unfortunately I don't know if anyone's developed subtitles for it yet. Does anyone have an opinion on this film? The sequel will be coming out soon.

Haven't seen the movie but heard a lot of positive comments about it.
Anyway, be patient... I have read in a Russian online newspaper that 20th Century Fox has planned to produce a remake with Timur Beknambetov as director. Their budget is at least $ 50 millions!
By the way, either Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp will appaer as the main character in the Hollywood version of this Russian blockbuster.
So, next summer you will be able to watch this movie in English.

It's a big puzzle for me, why to make a new film, just translate existing one. They can't make a better one anyway.

Sometime ago I watched Night Watch (Nochnoy Dozor).
I liked the film, though it's not "Matrix" or "Lord of the Rings", but there are scenes inspired by those movies, as well as "Blade" and "Prophecy". I would not call it truly original, but the story is an interesting take on war between good and evil. This film is definitely not your usual mystic thriller. But the ending was too sequel inspiring, as in too be continued. But then the movie is based on the first book from Lukyanenko's trilogy. All in all I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
I wouldn't put it in the same category as Solaris, Stalker or Kin-Dza-Dza, but it is definitely worth watching.
Also about american remake, isn't it what US stidios do all the time. If there is a foreign movie that is successful they release a remake instead of the original

Yery true pmatg, but let us not forget how poorly the Americans tried to remake "The Ring". Well did you eva! However it is most likely that I'll go and watch the American version all the same but I totaly take Balamut's side on this view.
