Talking hmmmmmmmmmmm

first of all, let me say that it is just an opinion, a point of view :o)

What i wanted to say is, that most of Hollywood and European movies, at least those widely known, that are meant to tell everyone what Russia is about, are not really what Russia is in fact.

Those who have seen the country, met the people and have some idea of it will understand what i am talking about. Those movies are all "foreigner's seeing" of the country. But from my point of view it is not really "about Russia", those are stories, in most of them Russia is shown in such a stupid way.. Take, for example the Armageddon - look at the Mir, the space station and at the guy ruling it.. And this is what the Hollywood guys thing Russian scientist looks like in 21 st century ;o) not bad huh? But let me remind you, Russia is still one of the most developed in this field, though.. we fell a bit behind.. but GUYS! not THAT far..

All i meant to say by all the above - foreign movies about Russia have nothing to do with the reality. But i should say that some of domestic movies are not having anything in common too.

Try finding a movie that wasn't shot for foreigners, try finding smth really Russian. Russian film making industry fell so far behind.. I see it from inside.. there has been about 1000 movies shot, but of such poor quality.. That's a real pity for me.

I guess i should mention the way i judge (again, it is JUST AN OPENION). I hate seeing actors "playing" not "living" the role. Most of Russian films are good in PLAYING. But for looooong time i haven't seen any movie with good actors action.. for too long a time.. I call such films "plastic". I hate seeing emotions being played, it's plastic..

I can name only two movies that can associate with the country for me.
If you want to know our past - watch "East-West" - this is really what i thing close to history and to the real situation of those years. Actors are amazing, director's and DOP's work too. BUT.. you should bare in mind, that it is PAST and Russia is not the same, and haven't been from a long time already ;o)
one of the best movies about Russian soul and Russia, for me, is "the Return" - DOP's work here shocked me for ever, the Directors work is really tough and sophisticated, the actors live every moment..

those two films are the "heroes" for me..

as for such movies as Nigh****ch (Nochnoi Dozor), i will tell you one thing.. I say, don't use CG (computer graphics) if you are not a master in it, just don't... It can spoil all the movie, even if the actors are making up for it. For me, the Nigh****ch is our "respond" to Hollywood, but .. the one we could give about 10 years ago.. I mean to shoot smth like that, all the industry should be at much higher level..

:o) i guess that's all, folks..

Dear Movie Buffs:

The best & truest russian film is the dirt old "Alexander Nevsky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I would have purchased it...but it was transferred from the video store I first rented it at...it may be very difficult to find.

The second best & truest heartbreaking & heartwarming tale is "The Thief," or "bor" pronounced "vor."

Both these films would be located in the foreign movie section(s).

I've seen a newer russian film about russian submarines...but I fell asleep while watching it with the volume on high and only woke during the "alarm." Therefore, I have no rating.

I've seen another flick about a deaf russian gal and her friend. I disliked her character very much...she was a dangerous idiot girl (no regard to her disability)...possibly bringing trouble wherever she went...other russians adored her...blah.

Actually I thinks more of a shame for Americans,
because lets face it a lot of american people
are very clueless about history and outside world.

Most Russians are too -- but I am yet to see any pennance.
