Poor Chichikov, all he wanted was a nice wife, some land, a few serfs, and perhaps and heir or two.

The fragmentary part 2 was really different from part 1.

Altogether I'd say it was an entertaining read, even comical. I found myself very intrigued by the plot, of which I had no idea.

oh, really - poor Chichikov....but he chosen such a way achieving that.

as for Gogol's style - brilliant poem (he named it 'poem', not novel). his advantage that he showed different types of people that epoch - Manilov, Nozdrev, Sobakevitch and so on. and his everyday life's descriptions are amazing in theirs reality and colourness...and good Gogol's humour certainly!
