Hello,

I'd like to move to Russia from Canada. My grandparents are from Russia and have told me that it's beautiful. I have studied the current situation in Russia quite a bit, but just have a few questions. I'm sure you've answered them, or ones like them, many times, but here goes again:

1) What would be the cheapest way to get from Canada to Russia?

2) How would I be able to stay in Russia legally?

3) What jobs would a English and French speaking individual with a HS education be eligible for, and how easy would it be for me to get one?

4) What is the average cost of living in Russia, as far as rent, food, transportation, etc..?

5) What would be the best city to live in, as far as reasonable cost of living and overall social situation?

6) Do the major cities like Moscow or St. Petersberg have public transit?

7) What would be the best advice you would give someone coming from Canada who would like to live in Russia(besides "don't" or something like that)?

Thanks!

Probably Aeroflot. There may be other ways if you want to live in the Far East.

You need to talk to a lawyer. Most likely you would have to find a job or become a university student. In the first case, there is a lot of paperwork to fill out (I heard there's a new law now for foreigners). In the second case, you would have to pay.

Teaching English and French at high school (if you are lucky to find such a job). Tutoring. Maybe in some foreign company you could do simple office work. You definitely need to know the language.

Rent depends on the city. Moscow is very expensive. Spb - a little cheaper. Food is probably slightly cheaper than in Canada, but again depends on whether you want to cook or go to restaurants. Transportation is cheap.

No idea. Everybody loves his hometown. For me that's St. Petersburg.

Of course. And it's very good.

Learn the language. If you live there, you'll be a foreigner with all the consequences of being such. Also, be alert: anything can happen to you anywhere any time, and you have to be able to react. You have to be strong physically and mentally. Just FYI: almost all Russian men have served in the army and many have served time in jail. Don't count on anybody's cooperation, be it police, ambulance, or any business you are dealing with.
