Apartment in Moscow (average, 1 bedroom) - about 300-400-500-....USD (depending on the district and facilities, the highest prices are in the centre of the city).

The food is cheaper at the food markets, but it safer to buy it in big stores. And always pay attention to the "Best before" date even when shopping in the department store.

The living cost in St.Peterburg is somewhat lower than in Moscow. But again it depends on how much you are able to spend. Certainly if you are going to live in the President's Suite of the National Hotel, you will hardly notice the difference....

Talking

It depends on your style of life and your eating habbits. $500 is approximately 15,500 rubles. Bus ticket costs 5 rubles. A monthly metro pass (for 70 trips) - 320 rubles (if you're a student, it will cost you even less). A metro pass for a single trip - 5 rubles. Food at an average (not central) supermarket: milk - about 20 rubles, bread - 5-10 rubles, cheese - 150-300 rubles/kilo, vodka (average) - 70-100 rubles, etc. Vegetables are pretty cheap at the local markets.

So, if you live in Moscow and cook yourself (dining out sometimes), $500 should be enough. (Btw, the majority of local people have to live on less than that, and they do survive somehow! ).

$500 - not really. $700-$800 is ok. Not great, but enough for comfortable living.
St. Pete is cheaper, the prices for an appartment start with $150. For USD 250 you can find a really good 2-rooms appartment, well equiped and in a nice place.
