hiya

I love Tchaikovsky, above them all. He seems to have this "chocolate-box" image in the West, from pieces like "Nutcracker" etc, but I prefer him in full-on romantic-tragic mood, in pieces like "Mazeppa" and "Cherevichki".

Shostakovich is fab too, that sound is so unmistakeable - the snare-drum always in there in the background somewhere :-)

How about Stravinsky? My favourite pieces of his are "Oedipus Rex" and "Symphony of Psalms". You really need a good solid Russian chorus to do these pieces justice, though :-)

Dr W.

Hello everyone,I am new French from Paris user.
My most favourite is Prokofiev.
I play piano and work hard to be one day able to play his
"Visions Fugitives" (Sorry I don't know the translation.)
I am so glad to find here at last where to talk about russian classical music.I thought no one would be interested in.
Tchaîkovsky is another world in itself, I would say a russian Mozart (whom he admired most).
Impatient to read more from you all.

that is quite an undertaking, Carine. prokofiev and rachmaninov both have incredibly difficult piano pieces. hard on the hands, but easy on the ears.

by the way, welcome to the boards.

Wink

Prokofiev's late sonatas easy for ears? Are you kidding?

Among Tchaikovski's there is no reputated great piano pieces.
He said, approximatively, that he did not know well how to compose for this instrument. And when he did it usually appeared unplayable.
Fortunately, we have his chamber music with piano.
THERE are masterpieces. Well.......too difficult for me yet!
