If anybody's interested, Radio Maximum from Moscow and St. Petersburg is broadcast 24 hours a day on RealAudio at the following address...
http://www.maximum.ru/live/maximum16.pls

...sure, they haven't quite learned yet of the "no repeats" formula of radio, but it's still good to listen to some Russian music in between the Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys.

Hey! Backstreet boys REMINDS me of Russia now. Isn't that mixed up? And the Madonna mix of "American Pie." The songs I hated most state-side seemed to be played WAY too often in Russia. Now songs like (thank God I don't know the name of this! The lyrics go, "A little bit of Monica in my life, a little bit of Jessica by my side...") make me get a bit nastalgic. Sad, isn't it?

(disclaimer: I still would rather see Russia without such a western music influence, and a Russian song will DEFINATELY "take me back" there far more than an American song ever could.)

Hi Lorisa

The song you mentioned ("a little bit of Jessica..." etc etc) is "Mambo Number 5" by Lou Vega, and I heard it only this afternoon on the Petersburg-Moscow highway on Russkoe Radio ("vse budet xorosho")

Other western songs still played here in Russia long afer being forgotten back home include "Lady in Red", "Words... don't come easy to me", "Lady of the Night", the entire output of "Ace of Base" (wah!), and over 15 years after being released, they are still whacking-out the 1980's French hit "Voyages-voyages"! (In fact I heard it in Kostroma last week).

Dr W.
