Can anyone recommend some good Russian for me? Not like traditional stuff or classical composers (not to say I don't like that, I love classical music) but something with a little more edge. I have a feeling Russian punk might be good?! Tell me what you think!

Hi Aaron!

I have found some GREAT Russian techno (and other music like rock, etc.) on Napster. Under the artist field, just type in "Russian" and numerous hits will come up. I have found lots of great stuff there.

Happy hunting!

Thumbs up

There's a lot of really cool Russian music out there. It all comes down to the style that you like... Zemfira's got a great voice, interesting songs, and she's probably the most popular singer among the younger crowd.

Chicherina and Mumiy Troll usually appeal to younger people, as well, but they're both probably too "poppy" for most people (especially M.T.).

Masha i Medvedi has a great disc called Kuda?. It seems like each song has a different musical influence.

For faster stuff, try Hi-Fi or Discoteka Avaria. Avaria is REALLY cool (get the song Pei Pivo!!)... they remix a lot of other Russian songs, as well.

A band called Ivan Kupala does traditional songs, but with distorted voices and faster beats. Kostroma and Kolyada are their most well-known songs (Discoteka Avaria remixed Kostroma, by the way).

For some slower stuff, grab a copy of the song "Soldat" by Lube, "Argentina Yamaika 5-0" and "Nikto Ne Ysly****" by Chaif to round out your collection.

Personally, I'd stay away from Filip Kirkorov, Naik Borzov, and Okean Elzi (they are all extremely annoying in their own ways)...

All of these bands have mp3s out there on Napster (while it's up) and even on their own sites. Discoteka Avaria, Ivan Kupala and Chaif, from memory, offer mp3s on their official sites. Of course, the next time you're in Russia, people working in CD shops are usually willing to offer some good advice and will often let you listen to some songs before buying the disc.

Just my 2 kopecks,

Dave

How could I forget Kino?? Again, it's not for everybody, but it's still a tremendously popular band and worth it to check out... some songs to start you off: Pachka Cigaret and Veter Peremen, two of my favorites.
