Welcome to the board Crux!
What I like about it is that it's bitter sweet.

It can be Festive (Like Korobeiniki or Kalinka) or it can be sad and depressing (Like Meadowlands or Katusha).

I think this pretty much covers Russian attitude/mood.

Hey All there. THis Forum Rules. I'm in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the only source for Russian modern music is definitivelly Kazaa. My first experience was with Taty, and honestly I didn't know them before...(I dont listen to FMs and MTVs very often...)I'm seeking for some other good stuff. I fell my russian side is emerging, I'll start a Russian course next week! I love it.
But it is still going to take some time until the Americas (and maybe Europe)get used, or at least open, to list to music on other languages other than native or english.
I tryed to show Taty in Russian to some of my friends and they hated it... But "All the thigs she said" sounds fine to them (I prefer Ya S Soshla s uma 100 times over the english version). I don't care the good stuff comes from teenagers or lesbians group, I mind whether the sound is good enough for my ears!
We have to open our minds and ears to new stuff. Try German, it's pretty good too (Nena is awesome).

Exclamation Russian Techno and then some...

For good Russian Techno, I would recommend Tanya Bulanova (Таня Буланова), Virus (Вирус), Kraski (Краски), & Yurko Yurchenko (Юрко Юрченко) to name a few, even though Yurko is a bit on the "pop" side. If you want to become an expert on Russian music just go to rbcmp3.com. Not only can you buy CD's and stuff there, but you can preview anything they have on there with Windows Media Player. After going there for six months or so steadily, I know more about Russian music than most Russians that I talk to online, and I'm just some guy from Wisconsin!

Balamut,

I guess PPK must have laid down the music track for Bulanovas' "Padayu Ya" in the version they sent to Wisconsin.....
