The Fall Of A Republic
When the thirteen colonies were still a part of England, Professor Alexander Tyler wrote about the fall of the Athenian republic over two thousand years previous to that time: A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage. >> the USA is a republic not a democracy.<<
For this remark, I hereby award Ron the "stupidest post of the week" award. A democracy is country whose citizens get to choose its governance. If it's NOT the citizens in the USA's case, I would be fascinated to know whom Ron THINKS choose the Government? Maybe he believes in that theory that Outer-Space Aliens are being secretly cared-for by a puppet US Administration, as Americans are not mentally ready for the news that their country is run by Martians? Citizens of France! Are you aware that you no longer live in a democracy, but in the Republique Francaise? Allons, enfants de la Patrie, le jour de la folie Americain est arrive... Dr W. |

Well,
democracy = demos + kratos (people + power; an. greek) republic = rex + publica (power + people; latin) --- actually I was thinking that Ronald was trying to say that the electional law and statutes are more alike the ones in Roman Republic not the polises of Ancient Greece. At least this is how I understood it. Could I be SO MUCH wrong?
