Saw a bunch of these last night headed south towards Richmond/Rosenberg on tracks running parallel to Hwy 90.

http://fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/hmett.htm

Couldn't be a unit headed overseas, because they were headed AWAY from the Port of Houston. Unlikely they were a National Guard or Army Reserve unit headed off to annual training, though this is the season for it, because it's pretty new equipment, and usually these units travel on the highway in convoys, not by rail.

Any guesses as to the probable destination? They look to be pretty rugged, I bet there are more than a few of 'em in Iraq.

Most of the Lend-Lease goods sent abroad to the Allies in WWII got to the port of embarcation by rail, of course. It's very efficient moving lots of heavy stuff rapidly.

PEACE,T.

Not to discount the importance of

good strategy and tactics, but logistics capability is absolutely essential.

What would happen if superior logistical capability was a priority in civilian as well as military thinking?

Would it be a matter of national security to ensure every citizen was adequately fed, housed, and trained to perform his or her mission? Would we be looking for "force multipliers" to optimize that mission? What mission would be worthy of a national mobilization for a technologically advanced country?

Explaining reality to Tova

America is the land of opportunity. This reference is to civilians having the opportunity to provide for themselves, not the oppotunity for the government to provide all for it's citizens.

Ask not what you can do for your country, but what you country can do for you, and don't forget to ask for a free lunch too.

Everyone in the US could easily obtain adequate housing, food, even job training if they put even the slightest effort into the task. Anyone who feels that the underclass deserves more than this should have their wages garnished for that purpose.
Usually, 8-Ball and I have to fight over the baseball bat to see which one of us gets to pound on you first.
Today, I'm not feeling well and 8-Ball gave me a few good kidney hits before I went down, so he won todays contest.

I would recommend that you Tovar take a look at this government web page that seems to offer all sorts of money to anybody that has a real need. All you have to do is answer a hundred or so questions about your situation and it puts you in-touch with the appropriate government programs to send you money. You can't beat that for convenience.

8-Ball's words never rang more true!
And how will the Bush tax cuts affect these programs, kemo sabe? Besides, all the job training in the world will not help you if the industry aint there, correct? We used to have these things called "airlines" not too long ago, for instance, but now the industry is pretty much in the dumpster. Same with steel. Same with aluminum. As a matter of fact, the mighty Yankee dollar is in freefall, now, pretty much, so even if you have a job, your paycheck buys less and less. Heavens to Betsy, whatever shall we do?

Sounds more like a job for carter, as he's in the labor market now. And toilet paper was invented by the Chinese. In 1391 AD, the Bureau of Imperial Supplies was churning out 720,000 sheets of it per year, each two by three feet, for the use of the Imperial Court. Another 15,000 special sheets, "thick but soft, and perfumed", each about 3" square, were for the exclusive use of the Emperor and his immediate family.

Now you know what Marco Polo REALLY went there for!T.
