you see, the brits legally took over two main areas of hk back in the 19th century. they are the hong kong island and kowloon. the third area is the rural new territories which the brits leased from china for 99 years, in effect until 1997. in 1984, the brits and the chinese met to decide what to do with hk after 1997. the brits decided to return the entire hk to china in 1997. although china is communist, hk is allowed to run their own government, fortunately...
