Safety tips for Russia?

Hi. I`m a English guy planning a trip to Togliatti to meet with a Russian girl i have known for many months. I have concerns about crime in Russia and corrupt police. I read that its best for foreigners to dress like Russians to avoid being mugged etc. Any help and safery tips for visiting Russia would be much appreciated.
