People are easy to influence. You can turn on a TV and see the advertizers who spend billions to get your attention. I suspect that a product that cost 100 bucks has maybe 45 bucks of the cost in the price of the advertizement. They used to put a lot more money into building a good product that sells itself but you can sell junk if it is properly presented. TV has turned to USA in to a land of parrots who do little thinking of their own. So a few spin doctors can get the parrots to say whatever they want said. Here is just one example. The new automobiles have computer controlled electronic ignition systems and I can get 100,000 miles to a set of sparpklugs and not need a tuneup. They really don't know that and never changed plugs nor tuned up engines. But repeating something like that makes the look like they are an authority on machinery.Well .A parrot could be such if he heard this and talked on it. But , I can smell gold. I can smell gold a billion miles away MANSION OVER THE HILLTOP --- ELVIS PRESLEY

Yesterday, I brought up this discussion in the breakroom where I work. I had to ask the opinions on this dipstick smelling, alot of people cracked up laughing, but one said that you can tell if your car is running normal from the smell of the dipstick. She said that if you can smell gas on the dipstick then your car is not running right. I just shook my head. One guy started laughing. I said to her, so can you tell if, #3 spark plug is working properly...the entire breakroom started cracking up. Hahahahahah...I just laughed, she didn't find it amusing at all....oh well, thought I would ask just to see what she would say...she gave me dirty looks all day...

--------------- Well. The guy is not totally wrong. You can smell gas if it is in the oil.The older cars had a gas pump bolted to the side of the engine. If it leaked inside the gas run into the oilpan.not good for the engine. So that is one reason that some smelled dipsticks. But if your oil level goes up on the dipstick you can know it was the gas pump. But some claim that they can smell transmission clutches and smell all kinds of problems.Strange to me. I went to several helicopter schools to become a helicopter crewchief. The army has the best of training on engines and the other parts that make helicopters fly.I went to civilian schools on aviation.None teach dipstick smelling. When you pick an aircraft up 1000 feet above the ground and fly 120 mph you want it to hold together until you are back on the ground. There were no dipstick smellers around any aircraft I was on. But I would like to learn the technique.I would build a stand on the corner of a busy street in Houston and charge a hefty price to smell dipsticks.
