I am glad Ronbo is ok.
Well, when I started posting here I was getting an MBA, after having a degree at law and economics.
Of course not all Russians are highly motivated, but many are - as were many europeans in XIX century and as most of americans still are.

And the issue is quite simple - we are still hungry - not just for becoming wealthy and succesfull but also for gettin more information and emotions.

I just returned from Greece (where taking a short vacation) - I wouldn't hire any of the locals I met there. They simply are satisfied with what they got - a [rather small] salary, a cup of coffee and a VW Golf-class vehicle. And, funny thing, same goes for the new EU member citizens.

We met several waiters at the restaurant coming from the Check republic and Slovakia.
Young men and women - actually students having their summer jobs at one of the nice Greek resorts (Stalida).
I was very much surprised - I heard nothing but complains from them -
- how much they have to work,
- how little time they have for having fun,
- how difficult the work is.

Holy flying freak, if I had an opportunity being their age - to live at a nice resort place in Greece, have most of my day free, practice in major european languages - and even earn some [though small] money for it - I certainly would be happy.

I agree with you ILay that in many respects -- especially in the quest for careers and making money -- Russians and Americans are very much alike in the main. Other traits we jointly hold are living in vast multi-ethnic countries and thinking big, so it's no mistake that Russia put the first man into space and America the first man on the moon. Even in regards to enemies Russia and America seem to attract the same menu of bad guys, which in an earlier day were the fascist Germans and Japanese and today the Islamists.

Therefore, it is a great pity that once again our nations appear to be on the eve of butting heads once again in a New Cold War that may easily end up in a shooting war.

What's next? I can't help but recall that the First World War started in August....
