programmers

Hello Titoman,

I spend hundreds of hours programming in basic with a commadore 64.

I don't program anymore but I like different programs, for example, I have Linux but haven't gotten online with it yet. I am hoping for a verson of wine that will run Compuserve.

For a browser I use Opera, writen in Finland. I dumped IE when I tried to go to CNN and wasn't allowed but if I wanted to see the news it would send me to MSNBC; you know what the ms stantd for. I dumped netscape because it seemed a lot slower than Opera.

Commodore-64? That were the good old times. I spent a lot of time on Apple-II, first in Basic, then in Assembler. Then I passed on Osborne II in assembler and later on the first PC's in Pascal. I stopped 6 years ago when I passed from DOS to Windows.

Opera works well? I use both IE and Netscape. If one is slow I use the other. Some time ago I tried Opera but I did not like it. I don't remember why.

programming

Rikbe,
It sounds like you went a long way programming but these days programming is for the few and the mighty companys.

With windows there is no DOS anymore but with Linux you can still use unix commands and be a power programmer. They are always looking for volunteers to program. Linux Mandrake 8.1 works better than windows to me but you must have windows to operate 99% of the programs you use. They are working on a program called wine that will let you run windows programs on a Linux (unix) operating system. When that happens Mr Gates won't be happy.

I was using Opera 5.2 and the netscape 6.2 and over time I have put netscape aside except on the rare occasion that Opera 5.2 didn't work. Last week I updated to Opera 6.0 and it has a lot of new things but nothing I really need. Now I hear that there is a opening in 6.0 that allows devious programmers to read your computer files. Opera says they will soon have this corrected.

I am against Bill Gates because he is an industrial dictator but at the same time he brings a lot of money to my country. How do you oppose someone who puts bread on the table just because you don't like his practices.

Greetings Old Reb,

Bill Gates may be an industrial dictator, but he is a rich one.
He must have done something right that made all those computer companies buy his products. But you can't deny that Gates did revolutionize the computer industry and kept it (for the most of it) organized. Also, look at what happened to those companies, like Commodore for eg. that didn't change with the times and stayed with their systems and operating platforms. Lost in cyber dust now.

have a great one,
John

Bill Gates...I only have one thing against Bill Gates...

It is this: he's not a conservative or libertarian!

He could buy CBS and fire Dan Rather!

He could buy the New York Times and fire all the liberal editors...

You would think that he would have been just a little bit pissed off when the Clinton Administration tried to crush his company.....BUT NNNNOOOO!

Bill Gates..Sad Case...He could have been so great!

Hey I'm a poet and I know it!

Old reb,

Yes, I went a long way since 1979 . When I started there were simply no programs and everything was possible. I wrote databases, word processors and transmission program. Most what I wrote were for personal use but I sold some programs also. I made some money by coupling home computers to other devices like typesetting machines, Linotype, AM and several others. The idea was to use cheap home computers to type texts and then transmit them to the typesetter to do the final layout. The error I made was to sell my system for a too low price so printers that were used to buy very expensive machines did not take my cheap system very serious. I only sold about 11 systems.
Then microsoft while IBM started to put the XT and AT on the market and in a short time it became easier to buy (or copy) existing programs than write them myself.
The fun was that you knew exactly what your computer was doing and with the apple II, if I could not do it with a program, I modified the hardware or/and reprogrammed the EPROM's .
The problem now is that I don't have the time to study anymore.
But I will try Opera again, I dislike both Netscape and IExplorer. Sometimes IE works slower than Netscape and sometimes it is the opposite. I never could find out why.
