Accidents are said to be non-existant. The gyroscopes and servo motors in the 'Segway' instantly respond to the slightest preference of balance. You basically think about moving forward and you move forward. If you want to stop, you think about stopping - you stop. It is quite bizarre and otherworldly, but very cool nonetheless.

BTW - It only uses 5 cents of electricity a day. This entails a work commute, lunch break, and evening outing. Energy consumption is basically nothing. You won't have to worry about deciding to buy it for a while. It won't hit the public market for another year. For now it is only open for corporate and industrial America.

From what has been said the 'ginger' moves between 8 and 15 MPH - though the speed can be set by the manufacturer.

Here's the ABCNews article [the news network who had preview rights]:
'It' Gets Around'
A top speed of 15 MPH? Not bad for the first models! I'm sure the speed can be adjusted upwards when they get into production. If you could get it to go 35 MPH you would be able to take it out on to many urban streets.

I admit that I was a bit of a Doubting Thomas when the news first broke about this new invention earlier this year, but it would seem a great way to around the city during rush hour!

Talking

I saw it on 7 o'clock news. It seems to work fine, but:

What when it rains and you open your umbrella at 15 MPH?
What about your bags when you go shopping?
How do you use your cell phone?
How do you walk your dog?
How do you scratch your nose?
But most important: what after a few drinks?

1. When it rains you get wet.
2. The bags go with you -- Backpack!
3. Cell phone: wear a headset with microphone (Radio Shack)
4. Buy a greyhound! Can run beside vehicle at 15 MPH.
5. Very carefully!
6. Three drinks? No problem! A six pack? You could get arrested for public drunkness if you can't hold your booze!

Thumbs up Doubting Thomases.....

Get out of the way if you don't want to change with the technology then the future will continue on without you

I would love to live in the city and have a chance at that thing. In and out of the way of people cars parking etc...I am sure they will improve this thing for when it is raining I thought when I saw it last year they had some kind of buggy behind it for your "stuff" I thought they also said you could take it to the office with you as well.
