![]() A lioness in central Kenya has baffled wildlife experts by adopting a baby oryx, a kind of small antelope normally preyed upon by big cats. Reports say the full-grown lioness came across the oryx two weeks ago in the Samburu Game Reserve, scaring off its mother. Instead of then attacking the defenceless calf, the lioness adopted the baby, protecting it from other predators, including a leopard. Extraordinarily, the lioness still allowed the mother oryx occasionally to come and feed her calf before chasing her away. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/wor...00/1746828.stm

Wow, weird story
Kinda sweet actually..
My cat has yet to adopt anything.. she kills everything in sight and never fails to bring it to my home lol I've had to throw out countless dead squirrels, rabbits, rats, seagulls, and once she actually killed a raccoon...I almost had a heart- attack while looking at a furry cat-like creature that's 3 times bigger than my cat.. how she dragged that animal to my house is still a mystery to me (disposing of it while my cat wasn't looking was pretty revolting) Brrr

Irinka,
WOW!! You have a monster pet!! My cat has broken through the screen of the patio door in hot pursuit of a few raccoons a few times. But we go after him and call him back, because if they get into a scrap with some wild animal, you never know what they might bring home to you ie. germs. Raccoons can be pretty nasty, I hope your monster kitty knows which ones to mess with... Oh yeah, don't forget about the foxes in High Park...you live around there, don't you? And I think they have actually seen coyotes or wolves there too!

You guys should really keep those dead critters that your cats dragged home, at least their heads (Jeff Dahmer in Toronto?). Racoons, as an example, are notorious for carrying rabies. The only way to check if an animal is rabid is to examine it's brain. So, if kitty starts acting "batty", you have a specimen for your local board of health.
