The Russians couldn't benefit much from Sebastopol because the Turks controlled the Bosporus and Russia didn't have access to the Mediterranian.

I was to Sevastopol, but it was many years ago. Then it still was a 'closed' city and you had to get a special permission to enter it. I liked the place - it was very clean and nice. And there was a wonderful dolphinarium at that time.
We have a legend in our family that one of our roots is from Crimea. From the times before tatars settled in, then it was a greek colony. Old-reb, By this year I visited Simferopol, not Sevastopol. I try to read any thread on the forums I moderate. This is the reason I don't always have time to answer.

Just to add to the Charge of the Light Brigade, The order was to charge a lesser gun emplacement (The "cannon to the right of them") but when the messenger reached the LB he gave the order as to just charge the guns, and the LB could only see the main gun emplacement directly in front of them.
Even though it was obvious suicide they just went "orders is orders" and went for it! When the Russians wounded & caught some of the LB alive they were shocked that they were sober. It's a great tale of incompetence and bravery in equal measures. ![]() |
