John Wilkes Booth, an actor, was a 26 year old Confederate sympathizer. Originally his plan was to kidnap President Lincoln, but later his plans turned to murder.

Booth planned to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, Vice-President Andrew Johnson, Secretary of State William Seward, and General Ulysses S. Grant. Booth was out for revenge, and he thought creating chaos in the federal government might lead to a comeback for the Confederacy. The Grants declined the Lincolns' theater invitation; thus Ulysses' life was spared. No attempt was made on Johnson's life. Seward was brutally attacked in his home, but he survived. Only Lincoln died. Booth, himself, never went to trial because he was killed while being captured.

The following Co-Conspirators were tried:

Lewis Powell sentenced to death

David E. Herold sentenced to death

Michael O'Laughlen sentenced to life in prison

Mary E. Surratt sentenced to death

John Surratt released from custody in the summer of 1868

Edman Spangler pardoned by President Johnson in 1869

Samuel Arnold pardoned by President Johnson in 1869

George A. Atzerodt sentenced to death

Dr. Samuel A. Mudd pardoned by President Johnson in 1869

Do I get a prize Tovar?
Just don't tell me the Pope did it.
Give that man a cigar! And so dies the myth of the "lone assassin"- the murder of Lincoln WAS a conspiracy- since Atzerodt was assigned to kill Johnson it is hardly surprising that he was not pardoned. For more of the story, see: http://www.schillerinstitute.org/fid...l_independence

All too many people do not, comrade.

You earned the smoke. Britain armed the Confederacy, and not out of the goodness of their hearts, either. And just so Dix is sure to win his wager I will point out that Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin was born a Jew and a British subject in the West Indies. After the War he escaped to England and a luxurious life as a Queen's Barrister.GOODWILLANDGOODNIGHT,T.
